Trigonometry

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • understand how secant, cosecant and cotangent relate to cosine, sine and tangent, and work with the graphs and properties of the six trigonometric functions for an angle of any size
  • use trigonometrical identities to simplify expressions, to evaluate them exactly and to solve equations, choosing in each case the identity or identities that suit the context, and be especially fluent with sect²θ + 1 = tan²θ and cosec²θ + 1 = cot²θ; the compound-angle expansions of sin(A ± B), cos(A ± B) and tan(A ± B); writing a sinθ + b cosθ both as R sin(θ + α) and as R cos(θ + α); and the double-angle formulae giving sin 2A, cos 2A and tan 2A
