Atomic structure and the Periodic Table
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Describe how an atom is built, with a central nucleus made up of neutrons and protons and electrons arranged in shells around it
- Give the relative charge and relative mass of each particle: the proton, the neutron and the electron
- Define proton number/atomic number as the count of protons held in an atom's nucleus
- Define mass number/nucleon number as how many protons and neutrons there are altogether in an atom's nucleus
- Work out the electronic configuration of elements having proton numbers from 1 to 20, e.g. 2,8,3
- State that: (a) the noble gases, which make up Group VIII, are monatomic gases that do not react and have a full outer shell, e.g. 2,8 (b) in Groups I to VII, the group number tells you how many electrons are in the outer shell (c) the period number tells you how many shells contain electrons
