Isotopes
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Define isotopes as atoms of one element that share a proton number but differ in their number of neutrons
- State that, because they have equal numbers of electrons and therefore an identical electronic configuration, isotopes of one element share the same chemical properties
- Interpret and use the symbols that represent atoms, e.g. 126C, as well as those that represent ions, e.g. 3517Cl –
- Work out the relative atomic mass of a given element, using the relative masses of its isotopes together with their abundances
