Atomic structure and the Periodic Table
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- outline how an atom is built, with a central nucleus holding neutrons and protons and electrons arranged in shells around it
- give the relative charge and relative mass of each of a proton, a neutron and an electron
- define proton number (atomic number) to mean how many protons sit in an atom's nucleus
- define mass number, also known as nucleon number, to mean the combined count of protons and neutrons within an atom's nucleus
- work out the electronic configuration for both elements and ions whose proton number is 1 to 20, e.g. 2,8,3
- State that: (a) each noble gas in Group VIII has a full outer electron shell (b) for Groups I to VII, the group number equals the number of electrons in the outer shell (c) the period number equals the count of occupied electron shells
