Naming organic compounds
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Give the names of these unbranched compounds, and sketch their structural and displayed formulae: (a) alkanes (b) alkenes, including but-1-ene and but-2-ene (c) alcohols, including propan-1-ol, propan-2-ol, butan-1-ol and butan-2-ol (d) carboxylic acids (e) products of the reactions set out in 11.4–11.7 that contain as many as four carbon atoms per molecule
- State which family a compound belongs to when it is given by a chemical name ending in -ane, -ene, -ol or -oic acid, or by a molecular, structural or displayed formula
- Name and draw the displayed formula of each unbranched ester that can be produced from unbranched alcohols and carboxylic acids, with no more than four carbon atoms in each
