Representation of data
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- select an appropriate method for displaying raw statistical data, and discuss the strengths and/or weaknesses of particular representations
- draw each of the following and interpret it: a stem-and-leaf diagram, a box-and-whisker plot, a histogram, a cumulative frequency graph
- know the mean, median and mode as measures of central tendency, and the range, interquartile range and standard deviation as measures of variation, and use each of them
- apply a cumulative frequency graph to estimate, e.g., medians, quartiles and percentiles, or what proportion of a distribution is greater (or less) than a given value, or lies between two values
- work out and make use of the mean and standard deviation of a data set (including grouped data), either straight from the data or from the given totals /x and x / 2, or from coded totals /^h xa − and xa 2 /^h − , then apply those totals to solve problems involving one or two data sets
