Doppler effect for sound waves

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • understand that if a sound source moves relative to an observer at rest, the frequency the observer detects differs from the frequency the source gives out (the Doppler effect when the observer moves and the source stays still is not required)
  • apply the expression fο = f s v/(v ± vs) to work out the observed frequency when a sound wave source is moving with respect to a stationary observer
