Hubble’s law and the Big Bang theory

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • understand that spectral lines, both emission and absorption, seen from far-off objects sit at longer wavelengths than their known values
  • apply ∆λ / λ ≈ ∆f/f ≈ v /c when dealing with redshift in electromagnetic radiation, where the emitting object is travelling relative to the observer
  • explain why the observed redshift suggests that the Universe is expanding
  • state and apply Hubble’s law, v ≈ H₀d, and explain how this gives rise to the Big Bang theory (only SI units will be required)
