Force on a moving charge
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- work out which way a force acts on a charge travelling through a magnetic field
- state and apply F = BQv sin θ
- understand how the Hall voltage arises, then derive VH = BI/(ntq), with t = thickness, and use it
- understand how a Hall probe is employed to measure magnetic flux density
- describe how a charged particle behaves when it travels through a uniform magnetic field, with the field perpendicular to the particle's direction of travel
- account for the way electric and magnetic fields may be put to use in velocity selection
