Temperature scales
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- understand that any physical property that changes with temperature can be used to measure temperature, and give examples, including a liquid's density, the volume of a gas held at constant pressure, a metal's resistance and the e.m.f. of a thermocouple
- appreciate that the thermodynamic temperature scale does not rely on the characteristics of any single substance
- convert temperature values in either direction, kelvin to degrees Celsius and the reverse, and recall that T/K = θ/°C + 273.15
- understand that absolute zero is the name for zero kelvin, the lowest temperature possible on the thermodynamic temperature scale
