Proton (1H) NMR spectroscopy
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- analyse and interpret the proton (1H) NMR spectrum of a simple molecule in order to deduce: (a) which proton environments are present, from chemical shift values (b) how many of each type of proton there are, from relative peak areas (c) from the splitting pattern and the n + 1 rule (limited to singlet, doublet, triplet, quartet and multiplet), how many equivalent protons sit on the carbon atom next to the one carrying a given proton (d) which structures the molecule could have
- predict the chemical shift values and splitting patterns shown by the protons within a particular molecule
- describe how tetramethylsilane, TMS, is employed as the reference standard when measuring chemical shifts
- give the reason deuterated solvents, e.g. CDCl₃, are necessary when recording a proton NMR spectrum
- describe how O–H and N–H protons can be recognised by proton exchange with D₂O
