Formulas, functional groups and the naming of organic compounds
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- understand that each compound tabulated on page 47 has a functional group, and that this group governs its physical and chemical properties
- interpret the general, structural, displayed and skeletal formulas for every class of compound tabulated on page 47, and use them
- understand systematic nomenclature and use it to name simple aliphatic organic molecules, including cyclic compounds with one ring of no more than six carbon atoms, that carry the functional groups tabulated on page 47, with at most six carbon atoms (six plus six in esters and amides; for esters and nitriles, only straight chains)
- understand systematic nomenclature and use it for simple aromatic molecules that have one benzene ring and at least one simple substituent, for example 3-nitrobenzoic acid or 2,4,6-tribromophenol
