Formulas

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • write the formula of an ionic compound using ionic charges and oxidation numbers (indicated by a Roman numeral), including: (a) predicting an ion's charge from where an element sits in the Periodic Table (b) recalling the names and formulas of the following ions: NO3–, CO32–, SO42–, OH–, NH4+, Zn2+, Ag+, HCO3–, PO43–
  • write and build equations that are balanced, including ionic equations that do not include spectator ions (b) apply suitable state symbols within equations
  • define empirical formula and molecular formula, and use both terms
  • appreciate the meaning of the terms anhydrous, hydrated and water of crystallisation, and apply them
  • work out empirical and molecular formulas from supplied data
