Formulas, functional groups and the naming of organic compounds
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- define hydrocarbon to mean a compound whose molecules are built from C and H atoms only
- understand alkanes to be simple hydrocarbons that contain no functional group
- understand that each compound tabulated on pages 29 and 30 has a functional group, and that this group governs its physical and chemical properties
- interpret the general, structural, displayed and skeletal formulas of each class of compound tabulated on pages 29 and 30, and use them
- understand systematic nomenclature and use it to name simple aliphatic organic molecules that carry the functional groups tabulated on pages 29 and 30, with no more than six carbon atoms (six plus six in esters; for esters and nitriles, only straight chains)
- deduce a compound's molecular and/or empirical formula from its structural, displayed or skeletal formula
