Particles in the atom and atomic radius
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- understand that most of an atom is empty space, with a tiny, dense nucleus made of protons and neutrons at its centre; electrons sit in shells within that empty region around the nucleus
- identify protons, neutrons and electrons and describe each one by its relative charge and relative mass
- understand what is meant by the terms atomic number and proton number, and by mass number and nucleon number
- describe how mass and charge are arranged inside an atom
- describe how beams of protons, neutrons and electrons, all travelling at the same velocity, behave when passing through an electric field
- work out how many protons, neutrons and electrons atoms and ions contain, when supplied with the atomic or proton number, mass or nucleon number and charge
- state and qualitatively account for how atomic and ionic radii change moving along a period and moving down a group
