The circulatory system

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • state that mammals have a closed double circulation made up of blood, a heart and blood vessels, including veins, venules, capillaries, arterioles and arteries
  • describe what the main blood vessels of the systemic and pulmonary circulations do, limited to the aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein
  • recognise capillaries, arteries and veins in electron micrographs, photomicrographs and microscope slides, and draw plan diagrams of the structure of veins and arteries as seen in longitudinal section (LS) and in transverse section (TS)
  • account for the connection, in each case, between the structure of muscular arteries, elastic arteries, veins and capillaries and their functions
  • recognise and draw lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes and red blood cells as seen in electron micrographs, photomicrographs and microscope slides
  • state that blood and tissue fluid are mostly water, and link water's properties to the part it plays in transport in mammals, limited to its action as a solvent and its high specific heat capacity
  • state the functions of tissue fluid, and describe how it forms across a capillary network
