The microscope in cell studies
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- make temporary preparations from cell material so that it can be looked at under a light microscope
- draw what cells look like on microscope slides and in photomicrographs
- work out how much images are magnified, and the actual sizes of specimens, using drawings, photomicrographs and electron micrographs (scanning and transmission)
- apply an eyepiece graticule together with a stage micrometer scale when taking measurements, choosing the right units from millimetre (mm), micrometre (µm) and nanometre (nm)
- define resolution and magnification, and account for how these terms differ, referring to both light and electron microscopy
