Blood
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Identify, from diagrams and photomicrographs, the red and white blood cells (lymphocytes and phagocytes)
- State the function of each component of blood: (a) red blood cells – carry oxygen (b) white blood cells – lymphocytes produce antibodies and phagocytes engulf pathogens (c) platelets – cause clotting, which stops blood being lost and pathogens getting in (the mechanism of clotting is not required) (d) plasma (mostly water) – transports substances, limited to: blood cells, ions, glucose, amino acids, hormones, carbon dioxide, urea, vitamins and antibodies
