Electrical charge
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- State that charge occurs in positive and negative forms, and that its unit of measurement is the coulomb.
- State that two like charges push each other away (repel), while two unlike charges pull towards each other (attract)
- Describe, and carry out yourself, experiments that demonstrate electrostatic charging by friction.
- Explain that when solids are charged by friction, the only thing transferred is negative charge (electrons)
- Give instances of electrical conductors and of insulators.
- Describe examples of electrostatic charge causing problems, including lightning and the refuelling of aircraft
- Describe examples of electrostatic charge being useful, including spray painting, photocopiers and insecticide sprayers
