Names and formulae of organic compounds
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- State that a structural formula shows, with no ambiguity, the arrangement of the atoms in a molecule
- Draw and make sense of the displayed formula of a molecule, showing every atom and every bond
- Name unbranched (a) alkanes and (b) alkenes having at most three carbon atoms in a molecule, and draw and interpret their structural and displayed formulae
- State which type of compound is present, from its chemical name if this ends in –ane or -ene, or else from its molecular, structural or displayed formula
