Photosynthesis
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Understand that photosynthesis is how plants use energy from light to make carbohydrates out of raw materials
- State that chloroplasts contain chlorophyll, a green pigment
- State that chlorophyll turns the energy of light into chemical energy, which goes towards making glucose and other carbohydrates.
- Outline how the carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis are later used and stored, limited to: (a) starch, acting as an energy store (b) cellulose, which builds cell walls (c) glucose, which respiration uses to supply energy (d) sucrose, which is transported through the plant
- Give the word equation for photosynthesis, together with its balanced chemical equation.
- Investigate how necessary chlorophyll, light and carbon dioxide are to photosynthesis, employing suitable controls
- Describe, and account for, how altering light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature affects the rate of photosynthesis.
- Investigate, with hydrogencarbonate indicator solution and aquatic plants kept under water, how changing light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature affects the rate of photosynthesis
- Identify and explain which limiting factor holds photosynthesis back under various environmental conditions
