Blood

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • Identify red and white blood cells (lymphocytes and phagocytes) by using a light microscope to look at prepared slides, and by examining diagrams and photomicrographs
  • List the parts that make up blood, namely red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma
  • Give the role of each blood component: red blood cells carry oxygen; white blood cells make antibodies through lymphocytes and ingest pathogens through phagocytes; platelets bring about clotting by changing soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin, which stops blood loss and pathogen entry; plasma moves substances around the body, limited to: blood cells, ions, glucose, amino acids, hormones, carbon dioxide, urea, vitamins and plasma proteins
  • Describe how substances move between the blood inside capillaries, tissue fluid and body cells
