Cell structure and function
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Examine animal cells and plant cells with a microscope, taking them from any suitable material that is available locally and preparing them with a temporary staining technique that is appropriate, such as iodine solution or methylene blue
- Draw diagrams to record what was seen in the animal and plant cells observed above
- Identify the ribosomes, mitochondria, nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane of an animal cell, working from diagrams, photomicrographs or electron micrographs
- Identify the ribosomes, mitochondria, chloroplasts, nucleus, sap vacuole, cytoplasm, cell membrane and cellulose cell wall of a plant cell, working from diagrams, photomicrographs or electron micrographs
- Describe a bacterial cell's structure, limited to: cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and circular deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) together with plasmids
- Describe the functions performed by the structures named above across animal, plant and bacterial cells
