The mole and the Avogadro constant

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • State that amount of substance is measured in moles, symbol mol, that each mole holds 6.02×10^23 particles, e.g. atoms, ions, molecules, and that this figure is called the Avogadro constant
  • Use the relationship mass (g) / molar mass (g/mol) = amount of substance (mol) to work out: (a) the amount of substance (b) the mass (c) the molar mass (d) the relative atomic mass, or the relative molecular or formula mass (e) the number of particles, by means of the Avogadro constant
  • apply the molar gas volume, set at 24 dm^3 for r.t.p. (room temperature and pressure), in any calculation that concerns gases
  • state that concentration may be expressed in g/dm^3 or mol/dm^3
  • work out stoichiometric reacting masses, limiting reactants, gas volumes at r.t.p., solution volumes and solution concentrations given in g/dm^3 and mol/dm^3, including converting between cm^3 and dm^3
  • Use data gathered in a titration experiment to work out a solution's concentration
  • work out empirical formulae and molecular formulae, provided suitable data are given
  • find the percentage yield, the percentage composition by mass and the percentage purity, where suitable data are supplied
