Simple molecules and covalent bonds
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- State that a covalent bond comes about when a shared pair of electrons joins two atoms, giving them noble gas electronic configurations
- Describe how covalent bonds are formed in simple molecules, including H2, Cl2, H2O, CH4, NH3, HCl, CH3OH, C2H4, O2, CO2 and N2, and show the electronic configurations of these molecules, and of others like them, with dot-and-cross diagrams
- Describe these properties of simple molecular compounds and use their structure and bonding to explain each one: (a) low melting and boiling points, explained by weak intermolecular forces (the particular kinds of intermolecular force need not be named) (b) poor electrical conductivity
