Chromatography
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Describe the method of paper chromatography for splitting up mixtures of soluble substances, making use of a suitable solvent.
- Describe how locating agents are used when separating mixtures that contain colourless substances; specific locating agents do not need to be known
- Interpret simple chromatograms in order to recognise: (a) unidentified substances by matching them with reference substances (b) whether substances are pure or impure
- Give and apply the equation that defines Rf: Rf = distance moved by the substance / distance moved by the solvent
