Series and parallel circuits

What this topic asks you to be able to do

  • Recall and use the following facts in calculations: (a) the current is identical at every position in a series circuit (b) the currents flowing into a junction in a parallel circuit add up to the same total as the currents flowing out of it (c) in a series circuit, the overall p.d. across the components equals the total of the separate p.d.s across each component (d) the p.d. across a set of resistances connected in parallel matches the p.d. across any single branch of that set
  • Calculate, for two or more resistors in series, their combined resistance
  • Calculate, for two resistors connected in parallel, their combined resistance
  • Work out the current, voltage and resistance for sections of a circuit or for the complete circuit
