Number systems
What this topic asks you to be able to do
- Understand why computers represent every kind of data in binary, and how they do so
- Understand the number systems known as denary, binary and hexadecimal
- Convert values between (i) positive binary and positive denary, (ii) positive hexadecimal and positive denary, and (iii) positive binary and positive hexadecimal
- Understand how hexadecimal is used to represent data and why it is a helpful way to do so
- Add together a pair of positive 8-bit binary integers
- Understand what overflow means and the reason it arises during binary addition
- Apply a logical binary shift to a positive 8-bit binary integer, and understand what the shift does to that integer
- Apply the two’s complement system to represent 8-bit binary integers that are negative as well as positive
